Trimming Down After The Turkey

According to the Calorie Control Council, the average American consumes more than 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat during Thanksgiving. Between the main meal, the pie, the drinks, and all the appetizers and sides the pounds can pile on fast.

Lucky for us on Fort Lauderdale Beach our beautiful fall weather provides the opportunity to get outside and burn off all those holiday goodies.

So go ahead and have that pumpkin pie (323 calories/slice), because some of our favorite outdoor activities (and amount of calories you can burn) are right outside our door.

Two Words: Turkey Trot

Fort Lauderdale Turkey Trot and Paddle

Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks, and one thing we are all thankful for is the annual Fort Lauderdale Turkey Trot on Fort Lauderdale Beach Thanksgiving morning. Not only does it give one an opportunity to get those calories out before calories go in as a 5K run in 35 min. will help you make room for a heaping 411 calories of Apple Pie.  It's also a great family activity and way to start the day, giving thanks for all we're thankful for - including 70 degree fall days and serene ocean views.

Ride a Bike

Broward County’s bike share program, AvMed Rides powered by Broward B-cycle, is offering free 60-minute rides over the Thanksgiving weekend on Nov. 25. Riders can take advantage of the offer by clicking here to unlock the promo code. This offer is valid at all AvMed Rides kiosks, including the four on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Regular rates will apply after the initial free 60 minutes.

Average 12 to 14 miles an hour and you’ll burn 544 calories every 60 minutes.

From Soup to SUP

Paddleboard, standup paddleboard, kayak

Many think of stand up paddleboarding as a fun and relaxing activity mostly anyone can do. However, it is also one of the best workouts out there, combining balance, strength, and endurance which are exercised whether you are paddling or just balancing on your board. It’s not only an excellent core workout but also the toes, legs, back, shoulders, arms and neck which all work together. And whether your SUP calorie burning workout includes Yoga, burning on average 416-550 calories per hour, or you're more a recreational paddler, you can still burn 305-430 calories leisurely paddling in an hour.
Bye Bye Pumpkin Pie.

Park & Ocean Sunset Paddle
Every Friday, paddle along an ancient and freshwater Coastal Dune Lake for a mile, an endangered ecosystem crucial to the environmental health of this state park’s barrier island system. This is our little piece of the Everglades for all to enjoy under the stunning casts of our Florida sunsets. Park & Ocean is located within Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. Contact us for more information 954-563-2900 or visit http://www.parkandocean.com/sunset-tours

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park
Hugh Taylor Birch State Park offers a number of ways to work physical activity into your day, whether you choose to join in on one of their complementary Interpretive Ranger-guided walks each Friday and Saturday of the month, bicycle along the 1.9 mile drive, rent a canoe to explore the coastal dune lake or participate in a monthly Wellness seminar. Every Monday, the park offers Tai Chi & Qigong classes to exercise the mind, stretch the body and invigorate the soul.

Walk It Off

Let's face it, Thanksgiving begins the merry-go-round of holiday feasts and parties, where of course beer, cocktails and wine are considered a menu course. However, while each glass you raise can add anywhere from 80-180 additional calories to your diet, a leisurely 60 minute walk will help you burn off a glass or two.

One of our favorite places to take a walk back in time is Bonnet House Museum and Gardens. Nestled among miles of beachfront development the 35 acres of a pristine barrier island ecosystem that make up the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens estate. Stroll through the grounds and view the finest orchid collections in the U.S. and catch a glimpse of playful monkeys and majestic swans during the hour to two and a half hour walking tours of the grounds and historic Bartlett home.
