Fort Lauderdale ranks No. 6 among the top 10 destinations for holiday travel by air this year, according to booking data from Expedia.
Miami copped the No. 10 spot. The top five destinations are Los Angeles, New York, Orlando, Denver and Phoenix, Expedia data show.
Rounding out the top 10 are San Francisco (No. 7), Seattle (No. 8) and Chicago (No. 9).
These results reflect air tickets already booked, Expedia said in a news release.
About half of all tickets for holiday travel are sold between October and November, which makes this period an expensive time to book airfare, Expedia noted. Airfares for holiday travel have increased this year to an average of $493, up from $483 in 2013.
As for the earlier Thanksgiving holiday period, domestic fares are up 17 percent, averaging $467 in 2014, compared with $400 last year, Expedia said.
“On a practical level, securing a less expensive flight leaves more money to spend elsewhere during the holiday season,” said Expedia Senior Editor Sarah Gavin. “There are still great deals to be found. Start looking now and use smart booking tips, such as being flexible with airports and dates, and also looking at flight and hotel packages.”
No South Florida destinations made Expedia’s top 10 destinations for Thanksgiving travel this year.
The top 10 cities for Thanksgiving travel are: New York, Los Angeles, Orlando, Chicago, Phoenix, Washington, DC, San Francisco, Boston, Dallas and Denver.
