Dust off your running shoes and get ready to work for your Thanksgiving dinner. The eighth annual Holy Cross Hospital Fort Lauderdale Turkey Trot is taking place on the holiday, Thursday, Nov. 22, offering both walk and run options for participants.
The 5K starts at DC Alexander Park, 501 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., with the course along State Road A1A. All proceeds from the event will be divided between Leadership Broward Foundation and the Helena Ramsay Soaring Leader Scholarship, which was created by MedPro Healthcare Staffing in memory of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Helena Ramsay who was killed in the Feb. 14 mass shooting.
There’s even something for the children: the 20-yard Kid’s Dash is at 8:30 a.m. and takes place in the middle of the park.
“Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks and to give back,” said race director Christi Bick. “The Holy Cross Hospital Fort Lauderdale Turkey Trot is a fun-filled, family-friendly event that not only helps support a healthy lifestyle, but also gives us all an opportunity to give back to two amazing local causes that are working to strengthen the future of our community.
“This year make the meaning of Thanksgiving all the more fulfilling knowing that it feels good to do good for your community.”
Aside from indirectly assisting local charities, registrants will also receive a race T-shirt, custom bib number with timing chip and a racer bag filled with products and coupons from The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, BurgerFi, Wizard Creations and Running Depot, among others.
The event will conclude with an awards ceremony recognizing the top three overall male and female athletes as well as the first-, second- and third-place age group winners. Music will be playing throughout the event and there will also be a Kids Zone with activities for children. Food such as fruit, bagels, protein bars, juice and more will be provided.
Registration for race day is at 6 a.m. with the race start at 7:30 a.m. Registration costs $40 per person. There are also discounted rates for students ($30), military personnel ($35) and children under 12 ($25). Visit TurkeyTrotftl.com/#18.
