Back in 1966, there was a beautiful girl named Paloma, a barmaid at the renowned Belmar Hotel in Mazatlán, Mexico. It was one of the best hotels of its time and the only one right on the ocean, at the meeting point of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. People from all over the world were regular guests, including Hollywood stars such as John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and Marilyn Monroe.
Paloma had created a drink made with white tequila, fresh lime juice and grapefruit soda. She served it with a salted rim and a Gardenia flower that she handpicked from one of the fountains of the hotel’s tropical garden. Many of the guests would come to enjoy her cocktail, entranced by the view of her beauty and the ocean behind her.
The legend says that one day of summer Paloma just disappeared. When asked what happened to her, nobody could say for sure. Some say she fell in love with a rich American guy from the northeast, while others say she traveled to Argentina, but to this day her real whereabouts remain unknown.
