Fort Lauderdale Air Show

America’s Air Show returns to Fort Lauderdale Beach, May 7-8, 2016.
The event will take place starting at 12:00 noon each day centered at Sunrise Blvd and A1A.

Taking place May 7 and 8, the Fort Lauderdale Air Show will be headlined by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, Canadian Forces Snowbirds, and Breitling Jet Team from Dijon, France. Other performances include the first civilian flight demo of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and the U.S. Marine Corps’ AV-8B Harrier, which can perform a vertical takeoff and landing.

Two newly announced aerial acts are set to soar over Fort Lauderdale Beach during the upcoming air show: the Geico Skytypers and an F/A-18 Hornet aircraft.

The U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornet is the nation’s first strike-fighter, a combat aircraft designed for air-to-surface attacks that also incorporates elements of an air-to-air fighter plane. Therefore, it can strike enemy forces or supplies en route to battle, and it also has self-defense capabilities.

The Geico Skytypers fly six vintage training planes—all 75-year-old aircraft maintained by a full-time staff of expert mechanics. Their demonstration at the Fort Lauderdale Air Show will include combat tactics and maneuvers used during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

The Skytypers are also known for writing giant, 1,000-foot-tall messages in the sky. Their planes are outfitted to release smoke in sync, which can produce an entire letter in three to four seconds. Each letter is taller than the Empire State Building.

“People on the ground can see our messages from 15 miles away,” Steve Kapur, the Geico Skytypers’ marketing officer, said in a release. “The messages appear in dot-matrix style, but on a monumental scale and 17 times faster than traditional skywriting.”
